A. Descent
from the Cross
From the same
chapel as the Crucifix in Room 2, it is composed of five polychrome wooden
sculptures dating from the second half of the 13th century.
The Virgin Mary
and St. John extend their arms toward the dead Christ, while Joseph of Arimathea
and Nicodemus take him down from the Cross, the one portrayed receiving the body
and the other holding the rope.
The group is one
of the most complete examples of 13th-century wooden sculpture from
Umbria-Latium, of which the Tivoli Descent is the finest
