A. Crucifix (late
12th – early 13th century)
Tempera panel
attributed to the “Master of the Blue Crosses,” an anonymous Spoleto-bred artist
thus called for the delicate blue color prevalent in his works. It comes from
the cemetery chapel of Roccatamburo di Poggiodomo. Christ’s face is painted on a
disk of wood tilted downward and decorated with small concavities that return on
the outside edge of the cross. The iconography is that of the Christus
triumphans with a living Christ. The upper bar panel is of the Ascension, the
central panel St. John and two Marys (the third panel has been lost). |
